The first two working group reports (on Extrasolar Planets and the Herschel--ALMA Synergies) were released in 2005 and 2006, and this third report covers the area of Fundamental Cosmology. The Working Group's mandate was to concentrate on fundamental issues in cosmology, as exemplified by the following questions: * What are the essential questions in fundamental cosmology? * Which of these questions can be tackled, perhaps exclusively, with astronomical techniques? * What are the appropriate methods with which these key questions can be answered? * Which of these methods appear promising for realization within Europe, or with strong European participation, over the next ~15 years? * Which of these methods has a broad range of applications and a high degree of versatility even outside the field of fundamental cosmology? >From the critical point of view of synergy between ESA and ESO, one major resulting recommendation concerns the provision of new generations of imaging survey, where the image quality and near-IR sensitivity that can be attained only in space are naturally matched by ground-based imaging and spectroscopy to yield massive datasets with well-understood photometric redshifts (photo-z's). Such information is essential for a range of new cosmological tests using gravitational lensing, large-scale structure, clusters of galaxies, and supernovae. All these methods can in principle deliver high accuracy, but a multiplicity of approaches is essential in order that potential systematics can be diagnosed -- or the possible need for new physics revealed. Great scope in future cosmology also exists for ELT studies of the intergalactic medium and space-based studies of the CMB and gravitational waves; here the synergy is less direct, but these areas will remain of the highest mutual interest to the agencies. All these recommended facilities will produce vast datasets of general applicability, which will have a tremendous impact on broad areas of astronomy. witam cosmo-pl, Wygląda jak zaczynamy się organizować w sieci :), ale część wygląda jak formalność - chyba aby moglibyśmy mieć pieniądze dla badania ? It looks like polish cosmologists and physicists are starting to organise a network. The Friday session will be held in the Radio Astronomy building in Piwnice, the Saturday session will be held in the Physics Institute. Atto-cosmology models (10^{-18}h^{-1}Gpc) predict 30% chance of rain in Toruń during the meeting. Details of how to get here and the program are below. Cześć wszystkim, Wygląda na to, że będzie ok. 10 plus/minus sqrt(10) kosmologów na spotkaniu: piątek-sobota 19-20 maja w Toruniu :), plus ewentualnie studenci i astronomowie toruńscy, co byłoby dobre by można było przeprowadzić szerszą dyskusję. Planujemy piątek w Piwnicach (budynek radioastronomii) + sobota w Instytucie Fizyki prawie w centrum miasta. Wyślemy więcej szczegółów jeszcze przed datą spotkania. Głownym celem spotkania jest, aby rozmaite grupy kosmologów w Polsce poznały się wzajemnie, wiedziały czym zajmują się inni i ewentualnie podjęły współpracę. Kolegów z innych krajów oraz tych, którzy zajmują się fizyką cząstek, serdecznie witamy. Witam cosmo-pl, The 3-year WMAP data is now available: http://lambda.gsfc.nasa.gov/product/map/dr2/ilc_map_get.cfm As expected from the Poincare Dodecahedral Space analyses, e.g. http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0310253 Luminet et al. http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0402608 Toruń http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0412569 Aurich Lustig Steiner http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0503014 Gundermann http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0504656 Aurich Lustig Steiner the estimates of Omega_total remain in the range 1.010-1.020. :)))) Spergel et al find: http://lambda.gsfc.nasa.gov/product/map/dr2/pub_papers/threeyear/parameters… Omega_tot = 1.015 (+0.020,-0.016) WMAP-3yr + SNLS (supernova legacy survey) 1.010 (+0.016,-0.009) WMAP-3yr + HST key project on H_0 No matter how hard people try to combine different data sets, it seems that nobody can get Omega_tot much closer to 1.000 (except by assumption). In the conclusion, section 9, page 61 of Spergel et al., you'll see that after people like me have repeated ad infinitum in many, many seminars etc that WMAP does not imply a flat Universe, it only implies a "nearly flat Universe", finally, Spergel et al. have started using this expression: "The WMAP data are consistent with nearly flat universe". :) Anyway, hopefully in the next week, i and the other people who have volunteered ;) to help organise a small, "polish cosmology" workshop/meeting in Toruń, probably in May, will send out a "pre-registration" announcement... pozdr boud
