More than a decade of deep spectroscopic surveys of galaxies, absorption line studies in quasar spectra and intensive numerical simulations have placed the interactions between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) at the center of our understanding of the formation and growth of galaxies. The IGM appears as the dominant reservoir of baryons at all epochs, provides fuel for star formation in galaxies and, in turn, is transformed by radiation, metal production and mechanical energy released through galaxy evolution.
The conference aims at reviewing and studying this co-evolution of galaxies and the IGM, from the completion of reionization to the present epoch. A large place will be given to numerical simulations as providing the crucial link between the baryonic processes involved and the evolution observed. The main topics that will be addressed are: - the missing baryons problem and the development of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), - the observational signatures of gas infall and outflows, and related phenomena observed at large scales (neutral hydrogen evolution, metallicity variations, etc), - the environment directly surrounding galaxies, the so-called circumgalactic medium (CGM).
