* 3 postdoctoral positions in Cosmology at UCT * Symposium "Beyond LambdaCDM", 13-17 January 2015, Holmenkollen (Oslo)
----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 postdoctoral positions in Cosmology at UCT
The Cosmology and Gravity Group at the University of Cape Town has 3 postdoctoral positions currently available to start by the end of 2014. Together with the string theory group (QGASLaB) and the Astronomy department, the CGG forms part of the ACGC - http://www.acgc.uct.ac.za/. Candidates interested in shared activities within the ACGC are especially encouraged to apply. - Please see details below and contact the relevant person ASAP.
1) A 1 year postdoc postdoc position is available to work with anyone in the group. The position may be extendable thereafter, however it will need to be taken up by the end of 2014. Please send applications or questions to any group member together with 3 references before the end of August (though applications will be accepted until the post is filled). Contact info can be found at http://cosmology.uct.ac.za/people/staff.htm
2) A postdoc position is available in relativistic cosmology to work with Chris Clarkson. The position is for 2 years, starting by the end of 2014. Please send applications or questions to chris.clarkson gmail.com together with 3 references before the end of August (though applications will be accepted until the post is filled).
3) A postdoctoral position is available to work with Amanda Weltman at the University of Cape Town and with the researchers at Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Unit (ACRU) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. We invite applications for a shared postdoctoral research fellowship to work in the areas of observational and theoretical cosmology.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work on research projects in collaboration with both UCT and ACRU faculty members, who have research interests in the areas of galaxy evolution, clusters of galaxies, the cosmic microwave background, and theoretical cosmology. UCT members are involved in various MeerKAT surveys, the cosmology working group of the SKA project and the IAXO telescope with an emphasis on theoretical cosmology. ACRU members are involved in many international projects including the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT; and its successor, ACTPol); the C-band All Sky Survey (C-BASS); various MeerKAT surveys; the Precision Array to Probe the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER); Planck; SPIDER; the South Pole Telescope polarimeter (SPTpol); and the XMM Cluster Survey. In addition, ACRU will participate in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project through the South African consortium. UKZN is also in the process of building an HPC facility. This postdoctoral position is designed to bridge theory and observation and to bridge the CGG at UCT with ACRU at UKZN. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to these efforts, as well as being encouraged to also develop their own independent research.
The position is available for two years with the possibility of extension to three years. Starting dates are negotiable and begin from September 2014. The successful applicant will be based at The University of Cape Town with a generous allowance for frequent travel to the University of KwaZulu-Natal. A generous allowance will also be provided for international travel and research expenses.
Applicants should e-mail a curriculum vitae, brief statement of their research interests, list of publications, and arrange to have three letters of reference e-mailed to the below address by August 30 2014 for full consideration. Applications will be considered until the position is filled. Note that applicants should have obtained their PhD degree within the last five years.
For further enquires about these positions, please contact Amanda Weltman (amanda.weltman uct.ac.za) or Dr. H. Cynthia Chiang (chiang ukzn.ac.za).
