hi cosmo-torun, cosmo workshop @14.00 Fri 12.12.2008 @KRA by Bartek Lew We are starting a series of work meetings: mainly me + Bartek/Agnieszka/Zbyszek. People who are not yet at research level (e.g. younger students) or non-cosmologists are welcome to come along, but the main idea is not only to inform others what we are doing, but hopefully also to make concrete advances in our actual research projects. If i remember correctly, last time we had a meeting like this, Andrzej Marecki came up with an excellent, original idea, so sub-CMB extragalacticians are certainly welcome. i think Bartek's idea is right: if each of us presents our work once a month, then that makes for a meeting every week. With the 4 of us thinking together, along with undergraduate students with different levels of interest and AGN people making useful comments, i think we have the potential to make a real cosmology group. :) Anyway, see you all Friday. :) pozdr boud

So the plan now is: "Ksztalt Wszechswiata" = seminar on PDS @KRA 10.15 Fri 24.10.2008 = today if you read your email daily. The content will be mostly on http://arXiv.org/abs/0801.0006 since i just read the email confirming what i thought had been put off to some unknown date until just a few minutes ago. Benasque - Glenn Starkman's presentation on S_xi approx 0

hi cosmo-torun, Monday morning and afternoon discussion at Benasque were especially interesting for us! Glenn Starkman pointed out how important the observed S_{1/2} approx 0 is. (Spergel et al 2003 definition of S_{1/2}, which we calculate with a slightly different version, S_xi in our new paper http://arXiv.org/abs/0807.4260 ) He argues that this was already noticed in *COBE* data. Some of his talk is probably in: http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0605135 He pointed out that it's not just low C_2 and C_3 which give low S_{1/2}. In fact, at least up to C_5 is needed. Also, for a cosmic concordance infinite flat model, there needs to be a conspiracy between the various low l's in order that *all* of them are sufficiently low in order that the result is a low value of S_{1/2}. The main suggestion from his talk to explain this was the general approach at making a relativistic version of MOND - TeVeS - rather than cosmic topology - but the Aurich et al. PDS simulations suggest that the PDS is a good candidate for resolving the "Missing Fluctuations" problem. On Tuesday, Dominik Schwarz gave a very thorough talk on the Averaging Problem. FNiS2008 will be 24-27 kwietnia 2008. http://cosmo.torun.pl/Cosmo/FestiwalNauki2007 Who is interested in doing a cosmo presentation? Agnieszka? Are you likely to be available 24-27 April? Zbyszek? Or maybe Helena - are you interested? Or someone else? My guess is the easiest thing is to keep the same title/content as last year, since they remain scientifically valid AFAIK. If Agnieszka at the last minute is not available, then Zbyszek or i can easily make that part of the presentation (if you give us your pdf presentation file :) - so the audience will still get a full presentation. I shall discuss such space representations for describing the shape of space around and inside black holes, next the global shape of our universe in the framework of cosmic topology. Canaries CMB winter school 19-30 November 2007 - deadline 30 June

I've just come back from another conference organized in Canary Islands. Deadline for abstract was January 31st but in practice I was able to submit mine until May 10th (!). The place is very expensive (77 euros/day are not so much surprising) but I suppose they will have good sources of funding for participants and everybody interested should at least try to ask them about it. Finkbeiner</a>, <a href="http://arxiv.org/find/astro-ph/1/au:+Dobler_G/0/1/0/all/0/1">Gregory Dobler</a> Comments: 4 pages, 3 figures The WMAP experiment has revealed an excess of microwave emission from the region around the center of our Galaxy. It has been suggested that this signal, known as the ``WMAP Haze'', could be synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons and positrons generated in dark matter annihilations. In this letter, we revisit this possibility. We find that the angular distribution of the WMAP Haze matches the prediction for dark matter annihilations with a cusped density profile, $\rho(r) \propto r^{-1.2}$ in the inner kiloparsecs. Comparing the intensity in different WMAP frequency bands, we find that a wide range of possible WIMP annihilation modes are consistent with the spectrum of the haze for a WIMP with a mass in the 100 GeV to multi-TeV range. Most interestingly, we find that to generate the observed intensity of the haze, the dark matter annihilation cross section is required to be approximately equal to the value needed for a thermal relic, $\sigma v \sim 3 \times 10^{-26}$ cm$^3$/s. No boost factors are required. Over the last decade tremendous progress has been made in the direct observational study of structures to look back times covering over 90% of the age of the Universe. In the current paradigm, cosmic structure grows through gravitational instability which acts to boost small initial fluctuations, seeded from quantum fluctuations during the inflationary phase of the Universe. Dark matter haloes are built up which host ordinary baryons. These blossom into luminous galaxies. While the evolution of the dark matter follows simple physics, namely gravity, our knowledge has significant gaps when it comes to describing the luminous, baryonic component of the Universe; this ignorance becomes spectacular in the case of the very first "luminous" objects which lit up the Universe at the end of the Dark Ages. Complex physical processes need to be considered. Through the use of increasingly sophisticated computer simulations, the first realistic attempts to model the process of galaxy formation over the history of the Universe are now being made. The purpose of the School is to provide to young scientists with the opportunity to widen their knowledge of cosmology and extragalactic astrophysics and to become acquainted with key recent theoretical and experimental results, as well as to foster an interactive exchange among participants. We seek to establish an atmosphere in which observers and theorists will review, confront and discuss with young scientists recent progress and future directions. The School is then aimed at PhD students and young scientists with a Post-doc experience of less than 4 years. Outstanding upper level undergraduates may also be considered. Each subject will be covered by 3 lectures of 2 hours each, delivered by a scientist who has made significant contributions to the topic. The format will emphasize discussion with some formal pedagogical review and related talks as appropriate. Generally speaking we would like to reserve the largest fraction of the day for discussion and informal meeting. There will be no registration fee and highly subsidized housing will be provided (the precise cost estimates will be available soon, but are typically $150/room/week, $50/week for students). The Topics are: Observational and theoretical progress in deciphering the nature of dark matter and dark energy . CMB and Large scale structure formation. Inflation after WMAP (in connection with the CMB and LSS data), quadrupole suppression and initial conditions; quantum effects. CMB polarization, primordial magnetic fields effects. Neutrinos in cosmology. In summary, the aim of the meeting is to put together real cosmological data and hard theory predictive approach connected to them. April 24-25, 2007 , CPPM , Marseille. The idea is to allow discussion between scientists working on current or future (either approved or still in development) wide field weak lensing surveys. Although a good understanding on the statistical limits of weak lensing exist, systematics are still to be explored in details and need to be fully understood (shape measurements, understanding and modeling the PSF correction, but also photometric redshifts and its requirements for calibration) in order to optimize the survey and ultimately give the best cosmology constraints. Furthermore, with the current and future lensing surveys there will be other lensing interests than measuring cosmic shear to probe cosmology, so it would also be very useful to discuss these science cases and understand their requirements.
