The spectroscopic redshifts are measured in the range 0 < z < 5, with a median redshift of about 0.76. The sample covers 0.5 deg2 of sky area. The on-line database gives access to the redshifts and quality flags, to the multi-wavelength photometric information, as well as to the images and VIMOS spectra. Even before then we will also have entered the ALMA (and JWST) era. This Workshop will provide a forum for the ESO community to debate and provide valuable feedback on how it expects the scientific use and required instrumentation of the VLT and VLTI to evolve over this period. It is expected that the results will have a major impact on the priorities to be set in the next ESO Call for VLT Instrument Proposals planned to be issued in 2008. Matter and Energy in the Universe: from nucleosynthesis to cosmology is articulated around our increasingly detailed understanding of the processes involved in the creation of the elements and about our increasingly confused picture of the content of the Universe. The year 2007 fmarks the fiftieth anniversary of two groundbreaking papers (the famous B2FH paper, and also a slightly less well known paper by A. Cameron) which finally put stellar nucleosynthesis on the map, and almost the sixtieth anniversary of the first quantitative calculations of big bang nucleosynthesis; although this latter paper turned out to be fundamentally flawed insofar as nucleosynthesis is concerned, it did lead directly to Alpher and Hermann's prediction of the ubiquitous cosmic microwave background radiation, whose detailed study using instruments on the COBE satellite earned this year's Nobel prize for physics. It thus seems appropriate to "stand back" and survey what has been achieved, and (especially) to highlight the puzzles which remain to be solved. Matter and energy in the Universe? will be organised around a number of basic themes, including: - the contents of the Universe - abundance determinations - primordial nucleosynthesis - stellar thermonuclear nucleosynthesis - the nucleidic evolution of galaxies - cosmological cosmic rays, galactic cosmic rays and stellar energetic particles - dark matter, dark energy: what do we really know, and what can we surmise - the future. The conference will consist of plenary sessions for invited indepth oral presentations (review talks and talks on specific specialised topics), and contributed papers, in the form of relatively short oral papers or posters. We will aim to achieve a balance between review talks, provocative talks given by recognized specialists, and shorter contributions, special emphasis being placed on participation by younger researchers and post-docs. If the need arises (i.e. if so many short papers are proposed that plenary sessions are insufficient), parallel sessions will be organised - please do not hesitate to contribute your work - time can always be found! This conference will be the 19th in a series of international mulitidisciplinary meetings which have in the past covered many topics in physics, astronomy and biology. hi everyone, Should we try to do a panel discussion on a cosmo subject at the 2007 festiwal nauk i sztuki? http://www.festiwal.torun.pl/zgloszenie/ i could give my standard talk (updated) on cosmic topology, but it would also be fun to talk on something different, e.g. .... (non-baryonic) dark matter. Here's an idea (sort of inspired by Andzrej S's presentation earlier this week): we could each present something which is a different aspect of non-baryonic dark matter: Boud - very short review of evidence for non-baryonic dark matter Andrzej Marecki - supermassive BHs in AGNs, possible relation with AGN life cycle Agnieszka - Integral/SPI possible detection - show the SPI "first image of nbDM?" Zbyszek - Can we detect cosmic strings? - can show some nice grav lensing A2218 etc. This would of course require us to each be *very* short and compact, preferably 12 minutes each rather than 15 minutes, in order to give the audience time for questions. DEADLINE: We have to fill out the form by Friday 10 November. We don't have to actually prepare the discussion until March (since the Festiwal is end of April), but we need to fill out the form now. hi cosmo-torun, We as the CA-UMK group of the cosmo-pp network need to choose, by this weekend (15.10.06), between Mariusz Dąbrowski and Marek Zrałek as "przewodniczący" of the cosmo-pp network. The vote seems to be confidential, though each group presumably has its own way of deciding. i suggest informal discussion by whatever means (email/face-to-face/...) and attempts to get informal consensus - consensus probably better *not* on public lists/twiki if it's about personal stuff of the two candidates, but IMHO it can be public if it's a meta-level question (e.g. should we ask questions to the two candidates?) i suggest the following procedure (since we won't necessarily get consensus): * everyone who wants to "vote" email me his/her vote before the deadline * i will publish the names of the people who vote and which candidate has the majority - if it's 50:50 i'll toss a coin. If someone wants a more formal or structured process, then please propose it. Both candidates seem fine to me, so i don't expect this to be terribly controversial, but as a matter of principle, i prefer it to be more participatory rather than less participatory. Reminder: this is cosmologists/particle physicists organising a "pre-formal" network in Poland, which can later be joined to create a European network, in order to get research funding for cosmologyu/particle physics. At the moment it's only "informal" with the idea of waiting until a new ustawa comes through, but the cosmologists from the different institutes are writing sort of formally. We're asked to respond by tomorrow (sorry about not writing earlier) about "votes" (or proposals) for a head of the council and a coordinator - several people have proposed Stefan Pokorski as council head and Marek Zrałek as coordinator. Oczywiście, będę też iść trochę na wyniki WMAP itd, ale nie widzę, że muszę to mówić w abstrakcie. pozdr boud Title 2006 Nobel prize: Cosmological black body and density perturbations Abstract The standard hot big bang model became widely accepted as a serious model in 1965 after the discovery of the 3 Kelvin primordial background radiation (CMB), but it was still regarded sceptically by many astronomers. During the 1980s and early 1990s, the model's prediction that the background radiation should have a nearly perfect Planckian black body spectrum was only weakly tested. The other untested prediction of the model was that the Universe is not perfectly uniform, it needed density perturbations which could gravitationally collapse to form clusters of galaxies and galaxies and stars. The COBE satellite, coordinated by Smoot, Mather and Wilkinson, revealed that the CMB black body was more perfect than any black body created artificially in Earth based laboratories. Moreover, in its map of the CMB, it detected 0.001% fluctuations in the temperature - revealing the density perturbations necessary to form galaxies. These results spectacularly confirmed two of the basic physical predictions of the hot big bang model.

The first two working group reports (on Extrasolar Planets and the Herschel--ALMA Synergies) were released in 2005 and 2006, and this third report covers the area of Fundamental Cosmology. The Working Group's mandate was to concentrate on fundamental issues in cosmology, as exemplified by the following questions: * What are the essential questions in fundamental cosmology? * Which of these questions can be tackled, perhaps exclusively, with astronomical techniques? * What are the appropriate methods with which these key questions can be answered? * Which of these methods appear promising for realization within Europe, or with strong European participation, over the next ~15 years? * Which of these methods has a broad range of applications and a high degree of versatility even outside the field of fundamental cosmology? >From the critical point of view of synergy between ESA and ESO, one major resulting recommendation concerns the provision of new generations of imaging survey, where the image quality and near-IR sensitivity that can be attained only in space are naturally matched by ground-based imaging and spectroscopy to yield massive datasets with well-understood photometric redshifts (photo-z's). Such information is essential for a range of new cosmological tests using gravitational lensing, large-scale structure, clusters of galaxies, and supernovae. All these methods can in principle deliver high accuracy, but a multiplicity of approaches is essential in order that potential systematics can be diagnosed -- or the possible need for new physics revealed. Great scope in future cosmology also exists for ELT studies of the intergalactic medium and space-based studies of the CMB and gravitational waves; here the synergy is less direct, but these areas will remain of the highest mutual interest to the agencies. All these recommended facilities will produce vast datasets of general applicability, which will have a tremendous impact on broad areas of astronomy. INVITED REVIEWERS SESSION I: PHYSICS OF OBJECTS AND PROCESSES Inflation as a paradigm is now part of the cosmological model. It is the most energetic period of the Universe. What is the underlying physics? What are predictions like those e.g concerning primordial GW which renders specific models falsifiable? What are the observational prospects? * Pre Big Bang period, inflation, induced primordial GW : Dr Mukhanov (Munich University) * Is inflation falsifiable with foreseen instrumentation ? : Dr A. Cooray (UC Irvine) Dark matter is probably unavoidable from galaxy and cluster dynamics and LSS growth. It is still a challenge to know what it is, and what the different detection methods can do to identify its nature. The theoretical predictions and experimental perspectives will be addressed with a special attention on high energy annihilation products * Dark matter annihilation and its products : Dr P. Salati (LAPP- IN2P3) * Complementarity between Direct and indirect Dark Matter searches and Collider Experiments : Dr Sadoulet (Berkeley) Supernovae and GRBs are produced by the cataclysmic end of stars. SN Ib/C, SNII and long GRBs are produced by the core collapse of massive stars and are intrinsically linked. SNIa and short GRBs are respectively produced by the collapse of a white dwarf and by the collapse of two neutron stars. Reviews on the origin and on the connection between these different phenomena will be presented. The impact on the cosmological applications of the long GRBs and SNIa will be emphasized. * The physical mechanisms at play in explosive stars : Dr P. Meszaros (Penn. State University) * Supernova and GRB connection : Dr P. Mazzali (INAF - Trieste) SESSION II : IMPACT ON COSMOLOGY The recent acceleration expansion of the universe has been put on firm basis using SNI. Reviews will present the state of art on how SN and GBR would be more and more "standardizable " as well as a status on present searches and future prospects. * Can we standardize the GRBs ? : Dr L. The astronomy community does not see fundamental research as a high priority. Maybe we should get jobs in a Patent Office? ;) Apparently not much has changed since 100 years ago... Dear Boud et al., You intuition is correct -- there are some additional in-between layers. The attached images show layers 1 through 5. Layers 6 through 9 are of course symmetrical as you work your way towards the south pole. Note that the cells in layer 5 sit "vertically" with respect to the equatorial hyperplane (i.e. they're orthogonal to the equatorial hyperplane) which is why they appear flat in the attached image (each dark blue hexagon is the 2D shadow of a 3D cell when you project from 4D space to 3D space). Anyhow, here's the accounting: layer 1 1 layer 2 12 layer 3 20 layer 4 12 layer 5 30 layer 6 12 layer 7 20 layer 8 12 layer 9 1 ----------- total 120 Note that all numbers are "dodecahedal numbers", respecting the dodecahedral symmetry of the whole construction. A tiling of S^3 by the PDS has 120 copies of the PDS. If we think of this tiling starting from "here" at the "North Pole" (sorry Marcelo, this is North bias ;) (image 1) and we "stick" a copy (image 2) of the PDS next to itself along a North-Pole-South-Pole axis (e.g. X), and then moving along the X axis, we stick another copy (image 3) next to image 2, and then another and so on, then it seems to me that image 6 covers the "South Pole" and is the "antipode" copy of image 1. In other words, the "distance" between the poles is 5 copies of the FD. This allows an easy order of magnitude check on the total number of copies, since the "radius" of one hemi-hypersphere is 2.5 "copies", so that the total volume is roughly (using flat space arithmetic): 2* (4\pi/3) (2.5)^3 \sim 2* 2^2 * (5/2)^3 = 5^3 = 125 which is a good approximation to 120. (AFAIR, Jeff Weeks showed me how to do this - this is not original.) Now for my question: We have 6 "layers": North pole - 1 FD layer 2 - 12 FD's layer 3 - n FD's layer 4 - n FD's layer 5 - 12 FD's South pole - 1 Clearly layer 3 or 4 has more than 12 copies, there are some spaces that need to be filled. But the value required for the total to be 120, i.e. n= 47, is an odd number. Intuition says that everything should be even and symmetric. Can someone give a nice intuitive explanation for why n is odd and why this 12-symmetry is broken? Maybe a nice diagram? In fact, i have a partial answer: it seems to me there are some in-between layers, which we might call 2.5 and 4.5 and i guess also 3.5. But it's difficult for me to imagine them, and it's still difficult for me to imagine how the 12-symmetry is broken. It would be nice if someone had a nice diagram or intuitive explanation of how the 12-symmetry is broken. Going to a 122 tiling would save the tiling symmetry, but intuition says that 120 is better than 122. On the other hand, 2 * (1 + 12 + 48) = 122 seems simpler in terms of tiling symmetry. Cześć wszystkim, W tej chwili mamy prośbę dać opinii o zakup między ,,standardowymi" książki konferencowych, każdy kosztują coś jak 100-200 euro, dla bibliotece CA-UMK. Ja znakowałem ksziążki, które mi oglądają jak użyteczny dla badania ekstragalaktycznego-kosmologicznego. Ale w ogóle, moglibyśmy prosić do Katarzyny zrobić nowy zakupy książki kosmologiczny, które jeszcze brakują. Chyba ostatnio raz, że zrobiliśmy, było 3 lata temu. couple of comments on the pixelization schemes

Hi Boud, I've been wondering about the optimal pixelization scheme of the sphere a couple of weeks ago and since I've send to you my own implementation of the Healpix pixelization scheme written (generally) in C (according to astro-ph/0409533) but compatible with GNU c++ compiler here I'd like to comment on some comments that can be found in the source code. And since you don't like private, closed conversations I also cc this letter to shape-univ. 1) First of all healpix is not stupid :)))) - it's cool because pixels have the same area which is not always the case (e.g.. quad-cube pixelization used with COBE data), because it's hierarchical and isolatitude of course, however the first and the last features are also common in other pixelization schemes. 1.1) But also very important thing is that it is more less "equi-angular" - i.e. the angular distance from pixel to pixel is more less constant. But obviously the exact "equi-angular" solution does not exist. 2) Now the my CPEDS library for doing useful stuff - and especially the pixelization.c has more useful functions so probably I should update the version I've send to you. i.e. - conversions from RING to NESTED and vice versa - calculation of ring given pixel and vice versa (in both nested and ring orderings) - estimated pixel size (maybe not that useful) since it may be probably just as well estimated from 4PI/N_pix. 3) The main point I wanted to come up with the new idea for pixelization scheme was the thing I addressed in point 1.1. But also the following 3 drawbacks of this scheme, namely: 3.1) the pixel shape dramatically varies from pixel to pixel. this is what I didn't like because of e.g. CMB lensing studies where the morphology at small scales would be very important - but of course this can be overcome with sufficiently oversampling the pixelization by increasing the Nside parameter to meet the Nyquist conditions. 3.2) the number of pixels in a ring does NOT gradually rises with increasing \theta (in spherical system definition consistent with HEALPIX - i.e. theta = 0 at North pole). Instead it only rises in the top (bottom) part of the north (south) polar region. This is certainly unnatural thing. since all the latitudes in equatorial (roughly from 41 deg to 180-41 deg regions are represented by the same amount of pixels in longitude) !! This is not the case e.g.. in he GLESP (Gauss-Legendre) or Igloo pixelization schemes. 3.3) It has an axial symmetry (since it has a poles equator, rings, etc). And why the CMB sky should know anything about the symmetry ? In particular why should it have an axial symmetry ? So naturally the solution would evolve into direction of platonic forms like tetrahedron, cube, ... oops it ends at icosahedron. And since we need a pixelization with number of pixels something like few Mpixels the 20 pixels of icosahedron is not enough. My idea of tetrahedron based pixelization system was just driven from this point of view that there should be no preferred directions in the sky. The system would gain higher resolution by looking for directions equally separated from neighboring directions (initially defined by axis of tetrahedron). This concept fails, of course because such a solution does not exist. Max Tegmark also went in this direction inventing the icosahedron pixelization system which is the next step after the quad-cube system, but each triangle is divided in other way. Anyway, at this time I see no point of terrible importance to force the idea of the tetrahedron pixelization system so I drop this case. rather it would be interesting to implement other pixelizations systems into the isolat packet. pozdr, Bartek

Witam "Why continue funding for cosmic topology research?" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The topology of the Universe (as an observational question) is one of the most fundamental questions of observational cosmology: it concerns the shape of the whole space-time that we live in. The Universe is clearly as important as any object inside the Universe. Knowing the "shape" of atoms, molecules, cells, mountains and continents is one of the basic steps in understanding any of these. At the moment, all that we are confident about regarding the shape of the Universe is a local property: it is "nearly" flat on the horizon scale; we do not know its global properties, such as its topology. Since the Toruń cosmology group is one of the most active groups in this field, funding this research topic is clearly a top priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Staszek Krawczyk asked me to write why "Topologia Wszechswiata" is an important research topic which is "worth continuing", in 5 sentences, within the next 10 minutes or so (and the 10 minutes are already up). So that's what the above statement is about. (This is related to some funding request. i've wasted enough time in KBN requests with zero positive results, so if someone else is doing the admin/political work, i guess i won't complain...) Jednakże, artykuły mogą być interesujący - dla osoby nie chętny do szukiwanie w arxiv.org. Np, raczej lubię artykuł Ashtekar'a: są dwa rodzaju ,,approaches" do grawitacji kwantowej - jeden w czymś jest m.in. teoria struń (jest teoria ,,perturbative", - drugi w czymś jest m.in. ,,loop quantum gravity" (związany z Ashtekarem) Ashtekar uważa, że z loop quantum gravity, nie ma osobliwość na a(t) = 0, bo zwykly czas-przestrzeń tam już nie ma.
